Porto (Portugal) shares its experience with sustainable development

Mr. Ricardo Valente, Deputy Mayor of Porto for economic affairs (Portugal), emphasized that Porto is building a detailed and tailored strategy with sustainability as its primary goal. To realize this, the city has changed its regulations; for example, 100% of the city's bus fleet is completely fossil-fuel-free. Porto only uses electric buses and buses running on natural gas.

“Furthermore, Porto aims for complete energy autonomy. Therefore, we are building energy communities within the city. This means we first produce and consume our own energy, and then we sell it to neighboring areas within the city. That is a significant goal we plan to achieve by 2030 regarding energy consumption,” shared the Porto representative.

Moreover, in all public procurement contracts related to energy, Porto includes a clause stipulating that all energy must be 100% renewable. The city has established a startup support program aimed at helping solve climate change. Annually, Porto provides funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) so they can help the city address environmental issues.

Regarding the international cooperation model between Porto and HCMC, Mr. Ricardo Valente said: “We have a climate pact between cities, with about 100 cities participating to learn from each other. We establish common goals, scale up the sharing of experiences, and participate in changing global environmental policy.”
